Booroomba Rocks

I first did the Booroomba Rocks walk the other weekend, seeking something new and exercisey to do on a Saturday morning, but not wanting to venture too far out of town (or work out too much). There are so many good bush walks and hikes to do around the ACT and I’m sad that it has taken me so long to realise this.

Booroomba Rocks is nestled just behind the monster mountain, Mt. Tennent in the ACT’s Namadgi National Park. The drive there is probably (what feels like) the longest part of the adventure. To get there, drive south of Canberra towards Tharwa. The easiest way to get there is to Google map directions to ‘Apollo Road, Tennant ACT‘ until you reach a sign that points you in the right direction, leading you to a dirt road towards the carpark. I’ll warn you now that this dirt road is relatively rocky, quite steep in some parts and has pot holes the whole way along, and we (somehow) managed to make it there in a little Holden Astra.

The walk to the peak took us around 30-35 minutes (with a few stops along the way) and the view was well worth the blood, sweat and tears….. (okay, now I’m definitely exaggerating). In all seriousness, it is a relatively easy walk, with a few challenging steepish areas, but the view at the top is worth it a thousand times!

There are several areas of the rocks which you can explore. There is one general look-out area, and two peaks either side of it. We explored the peak on the right, doing some serious bush walking and climbing the rocks. As it is winter, we came across a few frosty rocks and frozen puddles which were interesting to see given the sunny weather.

Make the trek out to Booroomba Rocks and you will not be disappointed! There is so much to explore and see that I can’t imagine ever getting sick of the place. I’d definitely recommend allowing yourself a few hours (we ended up doing a half-day trip) to get there, walk and explore!
